Grand palazzo opulence meets understated chic

With just 24 rooms, this intimate property is a seductive blend of resplendent Italian aristocracy and slick understatement that the Aman brand is known for.

Tell me about the legacy: The hotel occupies the 16th-century Palazzo Papadopoli, which is owned  by Venetian aristos, Gilberto and Bianca Arrivabene,  who still live upstairs. Inside, the grand opulence of the priceless frescoes, Murano chandeliers and Rubelli silk wall coverings are seamlessly paired with Aman’s trademark understated minimalism.

Why is the location special? Hidden within the San Polo district – away from the crowds of San Marco but still within walking distance – you get the best of both worlds at this hotel. Not to mention the arrival: right up to the Palazzo on a glossy Riva on the Grand Canal. 

What about the rooms? Slotted into the palazzo’s original bedrooms, each of the 24 suites are unique. Most have Grand Canal views, while all have spacious bathrooms, historical details and opulent palazzo flourishes. Plump for the Alcova Tiepolo suite, which has mesmerising ceiling frescoes by the 18th-century Venetian painter, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

And the food? From Arva to Cook the Lagoon at The Blue Room, dining can be casual or extravagant at Aman Venice. The former serves up the best of Italy, such as beef ragù, while the latter serves a tasting menu concept that focuses  on sustainable cultivation and farming. Don’t miss out on an aperitif at The Bar, which serves bespoke cocktails beneath an original Rotta fresco.
