Instead, expect a warm welcome and flavoursome cuisine that makes manifest Abu Dhabi’s rich cultural and culinary tapestry. And that’s the draw – swerving all-out opulence for nondescript interiors, the food does all the talking. To experience the best of it, opt for the house special, an array of authentic stews and sides served generously on a giant injera – Ethiopia’s staple foodstuff – and made for sharing. The sour, spongy ‘bread’ acts as both receptacle and vehicle for scooping up the likes of doro wat (spiced chicken stew), tibs fir-fir (sautéed lamb with onions and spiced butter), shiro (red chickpea paste) and key wet (tomato-based beef stew with Ethiopian chilli). A riot of colour and flavour is a given, but it’s not always pretty, so put the iPhone down and just enjoy it. A strong Ethiopian coffee will send you off with a spring in your step.
