Crown Shy

New York, US

Taking a plum street-level spot in the towering deco darling that is 70 Pine Street, Crown Shy could easily have been plucked from the pages of a Bret Easton Ellis novel detailing 90s excess. Until recently, the 1932 skyscraper – located in the Financial District – was home to little more than office suites, today, its polished confines house one of the city’s most stylish dining establishments. Opened in 2019 by chef James Kent (ex NoMad and Eleven Madison Park) and Jeff Katz (of Del Posto fame) the elegant space – read: abundant marble, lofty ceilings, full-hight glass and buttery leather seating – sets the tone for a roster of New American cuisine backed by global influence and European technique. Kent’s certainly not shy when it comes to flavour and it’s within such framework you’ll find the likes of white bean hummus with ‘nduja, savoury Gruyère fritters – a gougères-meets-churros hybrid dressed with chilli and lime – and the signature citrus-marinated chicken with house hot sauce. Pastry chef Renata Ameni elevates things further on the sweet front, plating up nuanced sundaes along the lines of cinnamon ice cream with buttermilk sorbet and blueberries.
