Glamourous masterclass in modernism on the Athenian Riviera

What’s the deal? Welcome to the Athenian Riviera’s OG resort. Framed by fragrant pines, Astir Palace came to life in the 1960s, as the area gained pace as a seaside resort, drawing a crowd that spanned from Greek royalty, to Hollywood glitterati and elite jetsetters. Set in Vouliagmeni on the Lemos Peninsula – close to both the Acropolis and Greek islands beyond – the landmark hotel has been reborn under the Four Seasons brand.

Setting the scene: Saluting the sea and curving around a bay like a hint of a smile, the laidback retreat trickles down to the waterfront in a wave of modernist architecture that sprawls across 100 acres. A total of $700 million has been driven into the property’s fresh look with Meyer Davis paying homage to its heritage, while taking it forward with modern design nous. Three private beaches are on hand for lazy days, while cabanas encased by greenery look out to the yachts that fleck the horizon like an ellipsis to a perfect day.

Retro chic rooms: As is emblematic of all Four Seasons properties, enveloping abodes hone in on a sense of relaxation and comfort. Light-filled rooms and suites – many complete with terrace space, some with gravity defying plunge pools – take in either sweeping sea vistas or verdant garden scenes. Retro touches are dotted subtly throughout, by way of mid-century furniture, tasteful artwork and geometric tiles. Bungalows focus on the glamour of the Riviera’s heyday, with muted nautical touchpoints and generous pool areas.

Added extras: Going the extra mile, arrival can be organised via helicopter, boat or private limo. The resort has three tennis courts, a basketball court, jogging trails and abundant watersports available. Island daytrips are made manifest thanks to the resort’s private tender. The elegant spa – featuring an indoor pool – channels the Greek tradition of bathing ceremonies alongside its treatment rooms. And on the F&B front, 10 restaurants and bars flit from Matsuhisa Nobu’s modern Japanese, to alfresco Greek favourites at Taverna 37 and upscale Italian trattoria Mercato. High-flyer Martin Brudnizki has also crafted two spaces: Michelin-starred seafood spot Pelagos and destination bar Avra.
