Le Rigmarole
Paris, France
This is the antidote to stuffy Parisian fine dining - but still fine, of course. Husband-and-wife team Robert Compagnon and Jessica Yang have developed a menu of dazzling miniature dishes cooked on a Japanese binchotan charcoal grill and served over a walnut wood counter lit by 1920s Tiffany lamps. The sparse menu of one-word dishes belies the intricacy of what's on offer: 'thigh' is in fact stunning yakitori in a clementine zest, 'oyster' is the mollusc as you've never had before (grilled with herbs and garlic), and 'meatball' is a sublime pork polpette. Unpretentious, reasonably priced brilliance.
