It feels deeply ungallant to mention that chef Margot Henderson is the wife of Fergus from St John but it’s the easiest shorthand to illustrate the experience on offer at Rochelle Canteen. Rigorously seasonal, assertively flavoured and unapologetically English food is served in a spartan dining room: beetroot soup with yoghurt and hazelnuts; monkfish with sorrel mayonnaise and monk’s beard; poached pear with custard and praline. And in case there was any doubt who Henderson is married too, she and Fergus can often be seen sitting in the garden after service, surrounded by regulars who love this place so much they’ve become friends of the couple. A true community asset, fittingly located in London’s original social housing development.
