This is a speakeasy in the sense that it’s hidden in a courtyard you’d expect to find in the Mediterranean, with secret entrance through a cafe, but once inside you won’t find any bartenders in braces or references to Prohibition. No hushed tones here when discussing the drinks either – gin in particular. The speciality here is South African gin, with more than 70 local bottles on the shelves. These feature prominently in The Gin Bar’s list of signature G&Ts, which draws inspiration from the building’s former use as a morgue. Each elevated G&T is billed as a cure for something, be it melancholy or impulse buying. There are spaces to sit in the secret courtyard, and gin tastings Thursday to Saturday.
