Young wine cognoscenti impressing the most discerning drinkers

A rising star in the Chinese wine market, Della Tang receives the inaugural Beronia Asia’s Best Sommelier Award 2023 while still being only 29. Her rich and profound knowledge of wines, complemented by an aptitude for insightfully attentive service, make her a leading force in China’s road to the global wine market.

Hailing from the bustling city of Shenzhen in Guangdong province, Tang studied psychology in Los Angeles, but later developed a passion for gastronomy while completing an exchange programme in the UK. Her passion having been ignited, she went on to study wine management at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and worked as a winemaking intern at Château Caronne Ste Gemme in Bordeaux.

After completing stints at the one-Michelin-starred Yam'Tcha and at the two-starred Le Taillevent, she returned to China in 2018 to work at Maison Lameloise in Shanghai, then landed the role of head sommelier at restaurant Ensue in 2019. Within a year, she had already scooped a Best Wine List of the Year award for the restaurant, quickly followed by a Sommelier of the Year title in 2020.

Key to her achievements is a foundation built on hard work and extensive personal experience. During her studies in France, Tang travelled to countless wine regions, including Bordeaux, Cognac, Champagne, Rhône Valley and Burgundy, as well as Napa Valley in the US, then Yunnan and Hebei in China. Her impressively extensive and in-depth knowledge of wines far exceeds her age, covering lesser known varieties from around the globe.

Perhaps due to her background in psychology, Tang is widely recognised for her ability to instinctively understand customers’ preferences and has a knack for observing and meeting the unspoken needs of guests. Her approachable, easy-going and thoughtful nature has helped her stand out among her peers.

At Ensue, guests are offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of wine through Tang’s talent and passion for wine and service. Having achieved the continent’s top sommelier award as such at a young age, Tang will undoubtedly become a shining star in China’s wine community.
