For fans of good music, charming environs and delicious drinks, Root Down is a Shanghai vinyl bar made to echo the storied trappings of the listening bars of Japan. Founder Gary Wang, formerly of The Shelter and The Grumpy Pig, also known as DJ VNutz, opened the bar in a former furniture shop in 2021. As expected, thanks to his musical background, the high-quality sound system pumps out excellent mid-century jazz and funk. For the cocktails, Masato 'Martsu' Hika (formerly of Ars & Delecto in Huangpu, China) is in charge of the drinks served at the long and narrow bar. Simple riffs on classics grace the small cocktail menu, and a small selection of street-style snacks are also available.
